it's not really the number of parties that's the problem. but you want to design a system where most politicians, most of the time, are competing to get the most votes from the whole electorate.

we need reform in many areas, but i genuinely think there's been a breakdown in the transmission mechanism from the people to policy, and this is behind many of the dysfunctions we feel today

Lo que es más inhabitual es que ultras de izquierda y derecha parezcan tener puntos en común contra la migración; como si los de afuera fuesen los culpables de resaltar defectos de los locales.

I struggle to think of similar historical situations. There are parallels with Latin American caudillismo, but almost all caudillos derived their power from the military. The regime's structure and nationalism look kind of like Serbia under Milošević, but obviously America is not on the periphery

Si entiendo bien la tesis de McManus sobre conservatismo postmoderno, Bukele sería lo más cercano en la región a su modelo, seguido de cerca por estos dos. La cosa es que aquí tenemos fenómenos políticos propios (caudillismo, militarismo) que influyen mucho, y que su propuesta no contempla tan bien.
