That's a wrap on palaeo presentations! At GEMMZ and CAVEPS I met some truly incredible researchers with fascinating projects. Thank you to the conference organizers and the folks who listened to me prattle about my trilobite research for a little while. I hope you liked my bugs!

I spent this week at CAVEPS, which is the best vert palaeo conference in Oz + NZ.

The AI imagery here is horrendous. It was the same in Paul Scofield's talks at CAVEPS. Given the push in palaeo to not use AI images bc of the wealth of great palaeo artists who should be paid, you would have thought Colossal and co could stump up $$$ bsky.app/profile/adze...
Paul maintains the goal is a "functional de-extinction", something "to all intents and pursposes" is a moa, walks like a moa, quacks like a moa etc. And there'll be one in ten years. Made from genetically-modified emu, because tinamou are too small.

Check out the latest episode of the PalaeoJam podcast, where I talk about the lie of de-extinction, which was recorded at the recent CAVEPS conference in Adelaide. I don't hold back. palaeojam.podbean.com

39 people, one quarter of the CAVEPS delegates, attended our best practice workshop for collaborating with Indigenous communities. The yarning circle couldn't get any bigger. This gives me hope that the future is looking bright for decolonising vertebrate palaeontology in Australasia.
It’s the first day of the CAVEPS Conference of Australasian Vertebrate Evolution, Palaeontology and Systematics, hosted by Flinders Uni on Kaurna Yerta 🎉

I’m often stalking but never posting on social media these days, but felt compelled to say what a great conference CAVEPS 2023 has been! A bunch of palaeontologists catching up and sharing their passion for their projects has been invigorating ⚒️🧪
