From CFPB's former chief technologist:

Expect yet another legal challenge as unconstitutional interference with an independent agency.

Especially since Congress explicitly designed CFPB’s funding to be outside of the normal budget process.

Meanwhile, Musk has been promising to offer banking services on X.

Part of the CFPB’s mandate is to protect consumers from predatory banking practices.
Elon Musk today calls for the elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created in the aftermath of the Great Recession to protect American consumers who the agency says "behaved responsibly" but "were also lured into unaffordable loans by misleading promises of low payments."

Ranking Member @lynch.house.gov blasts the GOP Tax Scam bill which will eliminate CFPB's Office of Servicemember Affairs and leave our military community unprotected in the financial system. What a shame.

This is an absolutely astonishing report.

DOGE did a complete takeover of CFPB’s systems at the root.

This is identical to worst case scenarios for the most devastating cyberattacks by foreign actors, only this is an *internal* threat
I want to highlight what I believe is a significant document that I reviewed for this story. It's a memorandum of understanding between DOGE & CFPB. In all the coverage of DOGE's takeover of agencies I haven't read or heard about a document like this. I think this stands out

BREAKING

Federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson just issued an order preventing the Trump administration from:

1. Deleting CFPB data

2. Firing CFPB employees

3. Transferring money from CFPB's reserve fund

Right after the order was issued, nearly all CFPB employees were placed on administrative leave

NEW: Judge HALTS the attempted shutdown of the CFPB, finding Vought's stop-work order and dismantling efforts likely violate law.

Trump must reinstate and preserve the CFPB's contracts, as well as its data, operational capacity, and protect employees' ability to perform legally required work.

Elon Musk is calling for the CFPB's remaining account balance of $711,586,678 to be returned to the American taxpayers.

That you give everyone $2-$3.

But returning Elon Musk’s money to taxpayers would give everyone about $1,300 each.

NEW: Federal judge blocks Trump effort to fire more than 1,400 CFPB employees.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson set an April 28 hearing over whether the CFPB's attempted RIF violates a prior court order. “It’s not going to happen in the meantime.“

JUDGE AMY BERMAN JACKSON: We are going to have a hearing on Monday at 10 am.

She says she wants CFPB's Adam Martinez, who filed a declaration for the government, to testify.

In a separate tranche of emails and texts, also filed with the court, a top CFPB person says it was Actign Director Vought — not DOGE – who decided to break CFPB's homepage.

Meanwhile, the House is going to complete the removing of the CFPB's cap on overdraft fees today, and nullify the rule that allows the agency to scrutinize Big Tech's entry into the payment system, in case you thought you could breathe easier.
April 9, 2025 at 8:20 PM
House Republicans voted to overturn the CFPB's cap on excessive overdraft fees — which was expected to save consumers $5 billion annually.

The House also struck down CFPB oversight over payment apps run by Big Tech companies.

The GOP is the party of letting you get ripped off.

Trump and Republicans got rid of the CFPB’s rule to cap overdraft fees at $5.

Now, big banks are taking even more money from struggling Americans to pad their own bottom lines.

Trump isn’t looking out for you – he’s looking out for Wall Street.

Called and told my senators about how, when my mother’s identity got stolen, the CFPB’s intervention was the only thing that got the banks to shut down the accounts that had been illegally opened in her name

Trump and Republicans got rid of the CFPB's $5 cap on overdraft fees, allowing big banks to keep raking in profits off of struggling Americans.

So just how much money are banks taking from consumers with these predatory fees?

@sanders.senate.gov, @blumenthal.senate.gov, and I are finding out.

DOGE's next target is the CFPB, which has returned $20B to the victims of financial fraud and abuse since 2011.

Trump just fired its pro-consumer director and had his Treasury Secretary, a hedge fund manager, halt the CFPB's work.

This is a coup against the American people.

NEW from me: The CFPB's consumer complaint system is more popular than ever, fielding over 2.7M complaints last year.

But Republican lawmakers still voted to slash the CFPB's budget, even after referring thousands of their own constituents' issues to the agency.

I haven't seen a cross-party amicus appointment like this since (checks notes) Paul Clement was appointed to argue for the constitutionality of the CFPB's structure.
NEW: Judge Dale Ho appoints Paul Clement to present “friend of the court” arguments on the government’s motion to dismiss Eric Adams’s charges.

CFPB's leadership has offered *no other defense* in this case but Martinez's declarations, which they just admitted were false.
They're restarting agency functions and claiming they never stopped, falsely.
Vought's going to lose big.
