Did Iran Use Chemical Weapons on Protesters?
The international community should immediately investigate accusations that the Islamic Republic attacked demonstrators with weapons of mass destruction. More than 30 human rights and civil society groups are urging the United Nations to investigate allegations that Iran’s regime deployed chemical weapons against protesters in January 2026. This call echoes concerns raised in a January 22, 2026, European Parliament resolution condemning the regime’s brutal suppression of nationwide protests. Eyewitnesses and victims from the violent crackdowns have reported that security forces used agents far more lethal than standard tear gas. “‘What was fired was not tear gas,’ one protester recounted. ‘People collapsed,’ another eyewitness said.” Iran, as a party to the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), has faced repeated US citations for non-compliance. Given these serious allegations, Iran’s history of treaty violations, and the scale of the repression—which resulted in thousands killed—the claims demand thorough, independent scrutiny and sustained attention from the United States and its allies, as well as the CWC’s implementing multilateral body, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Testimonies and information gathered by Iran International and other sources raise serious concerns about the possible use of chemical weapons by security forces. Victims described exposure to gases...

As AI sees wartime adoption, why OpenAI & Anthropic are hiring chemical, weapons experts
The growing use of AI in warfare has come under intense scrutiny after reports emerged that Anthropic’s AI model Claude was used by the US military during operations against Iran, even as Washington and the company remain locked in a bitter dispute over the technology’s military applications. The Anthropic vs US Pentagon tussle Claude, a large language model developed by the AI startup Anthropic, has been widely deployed across US national security agencies for tasks such as intelligence analysis, operational planning and cyber operations. United States Department of Defense systems have used the technology in modelling battle scenarios and analysing intelligence data. However, tensions escalated earlier this year after the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”, effectively ordering federal agencies to phase out the company’s technology within six months. The decision followed disagreements over how the military could use Claude, with Anthropic insisting on safeguards preventing the AI from being used for mass domestic surveillance or for developing fully autonomous weapons systems. Despite the order, multiple reports suggest that Claude continued to play a role in the US military campaign in Iran. The AI system is believed to have been used for tasks such as target identification, intelligence...

UK condemns "settler terrorists", Sudan's chemical weapons exposed, and Yemen's war escalates
Our editors’ weekly take on humanitarian news, trends, and developments from around the globe. On our radar UK leads 12 countries in announcing major shift on Israeli settlements Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced a major shift in UK policy toward Israel, recognising Israel’s occupation of the West Bank as illegal, and condemning the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by “settler terrorists”. In a speech to parliament on 8 September, Miliband said the UK would ban goods from Israeli settlements, sanction companies and individuals involved in settlement expansion, and refuse to export weapons to Israel that support the occupation. Eleven other countries – including Canada, France, Ireland, Spain, and Sweden – joined the UK in announcing similar moves. Some Palestinians in the West Bank – where settlement expansion and violence have spiralled – cautiously welcomed the announcement as a good though belated step. Others preferred to reserve judgement to gauge its real impact. The UK and other Western governments have long been accused of inertia, if not complicity, when it comes to Israel’s actions in the West Bank and the war on Gaza. Miliband did touch on Gaza, stating the UK’s support for the case brought by South Africa at the International...
