NASA has an entire program dedicated to finding asteroids before they find Earth.

Planetary defense begins by discovering, tracking and calculating the orbits of near-Earth objects.

NASA Releases Images of Falcon 9 Crater on the Moon

NASA's LRO imaged the crater from a Falcon 9 upper stage that hit the Moon on Aug 5. It's ~18m wide, <3m deep. The find took a global effort: amateur astronomers, NASA's CNEOS, and South Korea's Danuri orbiter.

@NASAJPL’s #CNEOS counts 29,131 near-Earth asteroids, 852 that are >1km in size & would cause catastrophic damage if it hit Earth. This summer I’m an academic director @SSPers where talented HS students in STEM are tasked with observing a NEA & determining its orbit. #AsteroidDay

The chances of #2010rf12 are interesting to say the least. One in ten. But it is about 7 meters and will be a problem for the unborn. What is clear is that our detection capacity is increasing.
