Republican U.S. Congressman Tom Barrett (R-MI), a freshman in a competitive district, has revealed that several of his Republican colleagues privately congratulated him for voting to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in Iran, despite not publicly supporting his stance. Barrett, a 22-year Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and at Guantánamo Bay, stated that while many GOP members agreed with his position, they felt constrained by political pressures and feared repercussions from Trump's inner circle. Barrett was among the first Republicans to oppose Trump on the Iran conflict, with later votes from Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa. In June, Trump publicly criticized all four lawmakers on Truth Social, labeling them 'bad Republicans' and 'unpatriotic.' Barrett explained that his decision was rooted in his military experience, not political strategy, emphasizing that his stance was not a response to the war's unpopularity but a principled position based on his service. The political landscape has shifted as gas prices have risen to an average of $4.43 per gallon, potentially benefiting Barrett's position as voters express frustration over costs. Barrett won his district by a narrow margin in 2024, while Trump carried it by a small margin. A recent New York Times/Siena poll shows Democrats leading the generic ballot in Michigan by 10 points, and Trump's approval rating in the state stands at approximately 36 percent. Despite his opposition to Trump on the Iran issue, Barrett has not fully distanced himself from the president, attending events with Trump, including a July visit to his district and a Rose Garden dinner for Republicans in September. However, he skipped the party's midterm convention in Dallas. Barrett faces Democrat William Lawrence, a Sunrise Movement co-founder, in the upcoming November 3 election. Republican pollster Robert Blizzard noted that while the party can handle differences of opinion, the strong association between Trump and the GOP makes it challenging for lawmakers like Barrett to be seen as independent. The outcome of the election will determine whether voters perceive Barrett as a moderate voice or remain aligned with Trump's influence.
