Noting a packed agenda of old & new #BaselConvention issues, BRS Conventions Exec Sec @rolphpayet.bsky.social tells #OEWG15 delegates their job is to review work since 2025, test if proposed outputs are sufficiently practical & robust, & ID what still needs refining before #COP18.
Since COP26, a massive kind of carbon offset industry trade-show type thing has emerged and that plus a huge increase in state actor attendees means 100k people are turning up in Dubai.
This is fundamentally unacceptable, and needs to be stopped ASAP

Since COP26, a massive kind of carbon offset industry trade-show type thing has emerged and that plus a huge increase in state actor attendees means 100k people are turning up in Dubai.

This marks the third consecutive year that a country heavily dependent on fossil fuel production has hosted the event. This trend follows the previous two conferences, COP28 in the United Arab Emirates and COP27 in Egypt. Besides, Qatar previously hosted COP18 in Doha.

STATEMENT: COP17 Advances Finance but Falls Short on Global Drought Action
ULAANBAATAR (August 29, 2026) — The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP17 in Ulaanbaatar concluded with the announcement of a $1.3 billion finance portfolio for land restoration and drought resilience, including $644.5 million identified as new finance. Countries did not reach agreement on a global drought framework, with negotiations set to continue at COP18. Held during the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, COP17 also placed a major focus on rangelands and pastoralist communities. Following is a statement from Susan Chomba, Director of Vital Landscapes, WRI Africa: “COP17 opened as disaster after disaster unfolded around the world. Drought is drying up water supplies, fueling wildfires and leaving families with failed harvests and fewer ways to make ends meet. The test in Ulaanbaatar was whether countries could get ahead of these crises, rather than keep scrambling to respond after the damage is done. “Drought was one of the defining issues, but countries still stopped short of a stronger global framework to address it. Drought may hit locally, but its impacts on food, water and economies can quickly cross borders.
