A quick colour study of An Cailleach Dhubh - the Cormorant. These intriguing seabirds have a rich and varied assortment of beautifully descriptive names as Gaeilge - From 'Broigheall' (Broghais/belly & Geal/white) to 'Cailleach Dhubh' (Dark Hag) to 'Fiach Mara' (Sea Raven).

I’m currently reading up on an old Irish term for a person who likes to stay home by the warmth and comfort of the fireplace (a person we might today call a couch potato). The term, cailleach na luatha, should immediately replace couch potato though. It essentially means “divine hag of the ashes”

The Gaelic Cailleach accepts offerings of bread, often burnt, varying by region and time of year. In autumn, near Samhain, she accepts this gift for her time of year has begun. #WyrdWednesday

There’s an old Irish term for someone who likes to stay home by the warmth and comfort of the fireplace (what we might today call a couch potato)... cailleach na luatha. I like to translate it (with some poetic licence) as “divine hag of the ashes”

Beira, Scotland's Queen of Winter, (Cailleach, Irish), is a personification of winter in Gaelic #mythology. ❄️ As a #weather deity she can create mountains, make winter storms, herd deer, fight off spring, & she uses her staff to freeze the ground. #FolkloreSunday #Witchsky

I think we should take a leaf out of Wales' book and have a mythical creature on our flag like The Dullahan, The Cailleach or a single, working professional that can afford a house.

#FolkloreThursday FolkloreThursday #Celtic: `An #Cailleach grows old in autumn and becomes younger as the winter passes, until in spring she relinquishes her hold and lets the summer flowers blossom.`

Cuimhne, Cailleach an Mhuilinn

Cuimhne, the Hag of the Mill whose name means 'Memory' as gaeilge, is a shapeshifting cailleach in the Irish mythological tradition.

The Cailleach bangs her staff & Autumn 🍂 comes ends The Cailleach has a number of residences around Ireland & beyond such as the Beara Peninsula in County Cork but her primary abode is Sliabh na Cailleach in Co. Meath (not too far from my home in Down) where she smokes her pipe & admires her work ☁️❄️

The Cailleach is the 'divine ancestor', associated with the creation of the landscape and with the weather, especially storms and winter. In Druidry, the barn owl is Cailleach-oidhche gheal, the white old woman of the night.
