If we are to trust AI summaries to quickly pull percentile distribution, that’s about 1.7 million families paying about 1% of the State’s personal income tax revenue. Interestingly, the current cost of CalEITC is $1.4 billion.
Because California’s income tax is so progressive a family of four making $100k only pays about $1000 in income tax right now (when the renters credit, dependent credit, and standard deduction are factored in). The cutoff for a family of four to pay any tax now is $77k.
Personally, I think people who are between the third and fourth quintile of income-earners in California should probably pay some income tax.

The 2025-26 fiscal year state budget funds the CalEITC free tax preparation, education, and outreach program at $10 million. While we're grateful for the continuation of this critical program, the funding is $2 million less than this year and $10 million less than preceding years.
