Groundbreaking calorimeter for the #HiLumiLHC

The @cmsexperiment.bsky.social has recently completed the first prototype slice of its innovative High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), which will be the largest silicon-based detector ever built.

Bomb calorimeter.

Venting the bomb was always extremely scary to me.
what is the most terrifying piece of lab equipment (for rational or irrational reasons)?

(inspired by discussion with my lab regarding autoclaves)

they're incinerating me in a calorimeter to check my caloric content tomorrow:[

Total capture cell energy? Maybe they should build our calorimeter.

The first law of thermodynamics applies only to closed system (like a calorimeter). The human body is an open system. We can control how much we eat and exercise, but not whether our individual bodies burn, store, or excrete extra calories.

Bill Nye - Counting Calories: Consider the Following! 💥

In this classic clip from Bill Nye The Science Guy on Nutrition (S04E02).. Bill uses a Bomb Calorimeter to literally BURN food to measure its energy. 🥜🔥

This post is brought to you by my remaining trauma from physical chemistry labs as an undergraduate. Every time some 🤡 says ‘calories in, calories out’ I am reminded how fucking useless the fucking calorimeter — designed for nothing but this — was at getting those calories out efficiently 😭
Bodies don’t actually *like* eating themselves Danielle, as shocking as that may be for some to hear 🙄

also the machine that measures this is called a 'bomb calorimeter'

As a college prof, I ran an amazing astronomy workshop for HS science teachers using HST public outreach funds. 🎢 🔭

As a federally funded grad student, I helped build part of the DZero particle detector at Fermi National Accelerator Lab. ⚛️🧪

Here we see groups of visitors on a tour of the @cmsexperiment.bsky.social labs.

The groups visited the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) labs, where new pieces of the CMS detector are created to cope with the higher number of collisions at #HiLumiLHC.

I think people still think you can understand energy metabolism based only on calorie counting the inputs, which, unless you're also putting all your, er, outputs into a bomb calorimeter, isn't true.

to tell how many calories you've burned you should enter a calorimeter and turn it on
