I don't know I think it makes sense with him having grownup in Cardassian occupied bajoran society that he'd internalise a lot of repression - an Odo who grew up in the permissiveness of the Federation would probably be more confident in self expression, as we see him become over the show

Was Cardassia occupied by the alliance, did the Federation help them rebuild or were they largely left alone? Has it become democratic or fallen into old habits? Did the Romulan crisis pull aid away from them? Are they resentful, or grateful for any help? How are bajoran/Cardassian relations? 2/2

man, the odo-noir episode of ds9 (s2e8) was so good.... love seeing odo out of his flesh-toned security garb(age)?? dark turtleneck/cloak looking thing in the murky cardassian occupied space station.. lord, i'd watch a series about the constable's cold cases.

one of the Picard novels (much better than the show) had the conceit of being set on a Cardassian-occupied planet held by the Romulans after the war. the Romulans are definitely going to kill the Cardassians as soon as the Federation leaves. everyone knows this. no one can say it.

When I started watching DS9 I was aware of Gul Dukat being known as "space hitler" in fandom.
But the more I watched the more I thought no! he's space hirohito! and Bajor is occupied Korea!
Then we saw the Cardassian court system and I thought there's no one they could be parodying but Japan.

When I started watching DS9 I was aware of Gul Dukat being known as "space hitler" in fandom.
But the more I watched the more I thought no! he's space hirohito! and Bajor is occupied Korea!
Then we saw the Cardassian court system and I thought there's no one they could be parodying but Japan.

Of course he does. He still has bugs in the Cardassian computers that he left behind. Though I doubt the occupation/surrender changed the local time. Hasn't happened anywhere else someplace has been occupied.

Only partway through the podcast but other than the idea that the cadets needing exposure to diplomacy & the give-take of it, the Federation President is part Cardassian & Cardassia occupied Betazed during the Dominion War so historical sore point makes someone else a better rep for negotiations.

Something I really like about Odo that doesn't get brought up much is how he's kinda low key fascist, and this is because of the environment he grew up in (Cardassian occupied Bajor) but we recognise this authoritarian streak as a negative by the contrast with the federation
