Thanks to conservation measures, a hunting ban, and the preservation of natural habitats, the bear population is gradually stabilizing. An estimated 300–350 bears currently live in the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Breathe in. Jonestown. She had thought of it more and more of late, which was disquieting. The before-time, a life without Magellanix or her phantasm, a world of pirogues instead of starships, dugout canoes in place of half-kilometer particle accelerators for hulls. No fusion emitters, just a single, triangular sail, mounted on a slanted spar. A simpler existence, but the lessons had been the same. Caution. Preparation. What it would take to survive. Then, as now, neither the piloting nor the paddling had been her job. There were older kids for that, boys with strong backs, heavy arms, and thick skulls, not suited to the glory and prestige of underwater work, even if they would certainly outlive her. Breathe out. She remembered what it was like in wintertime. And why shouldn’t she? Ragnarock was locked into one for eternity. But in Guyana, for a free diver, the seasons were felt at depth. The surface waters were always warm, but the thermocline shoaled upward in winter, a ten-degree difference at forty meters, the cold and dark hitting all at once. How well she remembered the transition, shifting from one reality to another in the space of a few languid heartbeats. Breathe in.

The canyon they were downclimbing was almost fifty thousand meters deep. The Derivator had augmented their strength and endurance in this place; else they would have had no chance at all. Even so — fifty kilometers! An absurdly impossible task. Of course, it was only a simulation, or at least so he told himself, repeatedly. But the vertigo was real enough, and if he fell, it was a very long way down. Could he actually die in here? The Derivator had refused to say, but the deeper they went, his forearms, hands, and fingers throbbing, the more possible it seemed. He paused a moment to look up. The canyon rim, somewhere far overhead, was no longer visible, just a narrow slot of deep blue sky all that remained. Why were they doing this? None of it made much sense. His job for decades had been to integrate disparate sources of information, to diagnose the behavior of complex systems, to seek patterns and structure in data. He was equal parts mathematician, scientist, and information specialist — and, above all, a monetizer of information in all its forms. But he had no idea what the Derivator was really trying to teach them. Their strange guide had promised to show them the horrors that lurked in the depths of this place. He imagined the Interlocutor saying something about empathy, the power of experience, to feel what the Derivator’s People must have felt when they attempted to descend a canyon like this one. He supposed it didn’t have to make sense. They were here, and the task was clear enough. Maybe that was all that mattered for now. He grimaced, resolutely adjusted his feet, and crept further down.

Kester drifted in free-fall, in a chamber carved in the middle of a carefully anonymous M-type metallic asteroid. Half a kilometer of rock surrounded her, but here, at the hollowed-out asteroid’s center of mass, she was weightless, Newton’s shell theorem still holding after all these years, the microgravitational forces tugging on her from all sides neatly canceling, allowing her to float in the humid air. Her whole body was the interface now. She was surrounded by renderings of space-time, the detailed topological observations gathered painstakingly by deep-space scout ships over the long course of years as they steadily pushed humanity’s sphere of influence outward. From the top of her head to the tips of her toes, as though all her chakras were aligned and participating, every twitch, movement, and gesture allowing her to tug gently on the vast, hyperdimensional foldings drawn around her. Seeking solutions, finding routes, searching for structure. Or, in this case, grading homework. The topology in question was a bit of the local bubble a few hundred light-years from Earth; the solution she was evaluating not her own. Tomorrow was graduation day, and she was reviewing one of her students’ final exams.
