The grant provides funding for non-destructive archaeological research into the archaeology of the Brú na Bóinne and Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Properties and the Tentative List sites.

My wife and I went on a trip to Ireland to see some of their prehistoric stuff; they have loads! Too many highlights but here's one - Carrowkeel Cemetary

Same as when Carrowkeel was hit with a spate of vandalism a couple of years ago. I think the key is making these sites look cared for - interpretation panels, comprehensive online information, education programmes...

Enjoyed a walk up to Carrowkeel Megalithic Tombs this morning. Fascinating. #tombs #walk #history #Ireland

Some more superb flowers seen in West Ireland, starting with Grass of Parnassus, below the Carrowkeel Neolithic hill, Mayo #wildflowerhour

Oh very much agree! I love kicking tyres (especially my own!)

I do hope that projects like this, the recent work on Carrowkeel etc, really help to build the case for creating a purpose-built archaeological archive and storage facility.

But if you’re interested in those sites, I HIGHLY recommend a further trip to Carrowkeel & Carrowmore, near Sligo. Very cool AND much less crowded.

There’s some evidence, iirc, that the society became less egalitarian over time (the folks at Carrowkeel & Carrowmore said… probably a decade ago? That the society that built that stuff looked less stratified than the ppl who built Newgrange… 400yrs is a long time!!)

They were also fairly closely related to ppl interred at another Neolithic site, Carrowkeel, near Sligo, near the NW coast of Ireland, hundreds of miles away, and built 400yrs earlier. Carrowkeel consists of many passage mounds on a high ridge, but the mounds are smaller than at Brú na Bóinne,

via tour bus, but they definitely require advance arrangements & get very crowded in summer. If you have a car, try Loughcrew Cairns near Dublin… OR if you can really get out of town, try driving towards Sligo & check out Carrowkeel & Carrowmore & Queen Maeve’s tomb. Also, Rathcroghan near Tulsk. 4/

Fair! Tho Carrowmore isn’t firmly determined to have an astronomical alignment (partly due to poor excavation practices—it isn’t pristine either! Carrowkeel is closer to unretouched, I think? And similar vintage to Carrowmore).

This is exactly how I like to organise my skeleton closet (Carrowkeel, Co Sligo)

Shockingly sad and pointless. Probably just thoughtless kids, having no idea of the damage they're doing.

Dublin: Books Upstairs + Bog Bodies at the Archaeology Museum + Glendalough
Galway: Charlie Byrne's + Connemara near Clifden
Sligo: M. Quirke Woodcarving + Carrowkeel Passage Tombs
Killarney: Muckross Abbey + Gap of Dunloe
If you do the Ring of Kerry, the area around Cahersiveen is stellar.

The so called Leprechaun house at Carrowkeel, Sligo is a ruined Neolithic tomb. Sliced by a field boundary, some of its material is used in the stone walls… I was inspired by this to come out of “drawing retirement” (1/2) 🧵

The day after ‘Brand Ireland’ has been showcased and celebrated across the world, a report like this emerges showing how our government is failing to protect precious Irish heritage sites

Massive brown sign post at Castlebaldwin on the new N4 dual carriageway saying CARROWKEEL which directs to a site with plenty of car park, little interpretation and no protection.
