Eigenlijk had ik niet zoveel moeten inzoomen en hem niet moeten pesten, want dan zou je deze groene distelschildpadtor (Cassida rubiginosa) echt niet zien. Poten, kop en antennen waren dan onder hals- en dekschilden verstopt, waardoor er niet eens een schaduw te zien zou zijn. #ElkeDagEenInsect

Larven van schildpadtorretjes (Cassida) hebben een vorkvormig aanhangsel op hun achterlijf waaraan ze hun uitwerpselen en restanten van eerdere vervellingen dragen. Dat is fijne bescherming tegen predatoren en bovendien goede camouflage. #ElkeDagEenInsect

A top find (not by me) on Wednesday's trip to Llanymynech Rocks was the tortoise beetle Cassida nebulosa, only the second VC40 record. Lovely thing. It appeared at the same time as the much commoner C. rubiginosa (the green one), allowing a nice side by side comparison.

De Cassida vittata (waarschijnlijk het exemplaar op foto) lijkt erg op Cassida nobilis. De beesten zijn variabel met soms wat overlap tussen de soorten. Voor een betere determinatie zou je ook de onderkant moeten fotograferen. Dat heb ik hem niet gevraagd…. #elkedageeninsect

1/2 #speciesaday no. 577 is Cassida viridis. A large, green and very round tortoise beetle that feeds on Water Mint. Usually found where there are large stands of the foodplant.
