If you care about security, don't do that.
cat foo.?? will grab too many things, including unwanted shit.
(as always with unix it's a pain in the *ss to fix)

files, too, with the -b option. To split a file into 1GB chucks, you'd use something like: $ split -b 1G largefile largefile. Here, largefile is the file to split and largefile. is the prefix to use for the pieces. Split adds aa to the first Piece, ab to the second and so on, but it does not add a dot before it, so including a dot in the prefix makes the output more readable. Joining the files together again is done with the catcommand: $ cat largefile.?? >newlargefile
