This study addresses the challenges of differentiating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from non-CTCs in liquid biopsy data, including the tedious manual evaluation required by the FDA-approved CellSearch system. Using self-supervision and a machine learning classifier for binary classification, the study proposes a targeted human-in-the-loop approach that automatically selects valuable new unlabeled training samples and lets human experts label a limited number of these samples. The goal is to improve classifier accuracy while minimizing human expert time consumption.
