Cercopoidea: Spittlebug superfamily (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha). Nymphs create foam 'cuckoo spit' from xylem sap. Pests like Mahanarva fimbriolata damage sugarcane in Brazil. ~3,000 spp. worldwide. #Entomology #Biodiversity 🧪

Spittlebug nymphs (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea) create masses of bubbles from their butts. They hide in these masses while feeding on plants in order to hide from predators. This individual was feeding on a night-flowering silene (Caryophyllaceae: Silene noctiflora). Blissfield Michigan, 20 May 2011.

The #Cercopoidea #spittle bugs, as soft baby nymphs they hide encased in froth produced by mixing their excreta with air. As adults they have their leap and wings to flee, but they gotta get there first!

Can't get over how clear/bubble-free this spittle mass is. You can easily see the spittlebug nymph inside. It's like a tiny fish (bug?) bowl! 🤩

P.S. - that fluid all came from its anus 😳

#spittlebugs (cercopoidea) are fascinating insects to find

Spittlebugs (superfamily Cercopoidea) are known for their nymphs, which hide in foamy “spit” made from watery urine, air, and a sticky chemical. This foam regulates temperature, retains moisture, and deters predators—creating a protective bubble for the developing insect.

Nature inspires several disciplines, such as biomechanics. Froghoppers' (Cercopoidea) hind leg muscles are shaped and arranged to store and release energy like a catapult. This enables them to accelerate 4x faster and jump 135x higher than fleas relative to body length 😮.

I've seen that before too and was under the impression it could have also been insects but maybe that's just because it looked like the spittle from the insect family Cercopoidea.

pretty sure it's a different species. Cercopoidea seem to have quite a lot of species that look like this. I just removed a few from India from P. bicincta in iNaturalist :)

Ah, Nature's little bubble blower, the spittlebug. Inside that frothy foam sits a juvenile or several juvenile spittlebugs (Superfamily Cercopoidea).

These tiny insects hide in “spit” to stay cool, moist, and safe from predators. More info ⬇️

yes! it’s a family of bugs called spittle bugs (Cercopoidea). the nymphs are sap feeders, which they use to produce this foam as protection from predators and the elements. they are actually very cool little bugs.

I spent some time browsing Cercopoidea on Inat and see what you are saying, there are a lot of similarly marked ones (It must be a good design!). There are also some absolute amazingly marked ones and now I am going to go spend some time bliss-scrolling 😻
