If you've ever seen 'cuckoo spit' (a foamy substance) on a plant, this amazing insect may well be the cause.
In their nymph stage, alder spittlebugs create a bubbly cocoon for protection from predators.

Cuckoo Spit on some Ribwort Plantain. Absolutely nothing to do with a Cuckoo. It is produced by the nymphs of froghoppers, also called spittlebugs, which feed on plant sap and excrete a frothy substance that protects them from predators and environmental conditions. #photography #EastCoastKin

Have you ever noticed white gobs of foam on your plants in the spring? I knew they were made by spit bugs (technically spittlebugs) but I always thought they were eggs. BUT IT'S ACTUALLY SO MUCH BETTER. They are basically bug farts made by these tiny alien-looking spit bug nymphs (juveniles). 🧪🪲🌿
The foam obscured the spittlebugs' movements, distorting them like an image scanned at a low #resolution. Ava was sure they were up to somethinglur-blurs of orange and red mixed with the spittlebugs' yellow and green. What new excuse were they concocting for playing firefighters?

Common Froghopper also called Spittlebugs. Philaenus spumariu which nicely translates to foam lover 😀 Yep you’ve guessed it these little bugs larvae are responsible for the foam seen on plant stems.
