This was the cover for the last book in the Faded Sun trilogy, and the art was later used for the collected edition.

Hell yes! Cherryh is one of my fave authors :)

Good morning! I'm feeling *great*😄, but being glued to the news all week has seriously interfered with reading A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. I like what I’ve managed to read so far, though. The C.J. Cherryh influence is clear in this old-school-ish sf, and that is not a bad thing at all!

Gate of Ivrel by C.J. Cherryh

Frontloaded with so much exposition. More fantasy clan politics than magic or sci-fi.

Vanye is exhausting. I don't care about his family drama or his honor code & wanted more Morgaine as MC.

More interested with their next journey going forward.

3 out of 5

This is hands down my favourite bookcover ever.
On one of my most favourite books, too.
C.J. Cherryh is a great author.
Michael Whelan is a great artist.
Together?
Unstoppable.
Simple as.

But the simple truth is Works of Vermin isn't for everyone. Not everybody likes to spend 100 or so pages a little bit confused about things.
Fortunately the genre is a big tent that encompasses Gene Wolfe and Ada Palmer to John Scalzi And C J Cherryh

Check out C. J. Cherryh as well.

Her book, "The Paladin," is a masterclass in both writing and mentor/mentee relationship, presenting exposition in character as the information is relevant to the character's choices, and finally in the value of leaving things unsaid.

If you want alien aliens you need books, not movies. A few good inventors of non-humanoid aliens: Alan Dean Foster, Piers Anthony, C.J. Cherryh.

This was the cover art that made me pick up my first CJ Cherryh in my high-school library. Thank you for that introduction to one of my enduring favourite authors.

I mean these are all good books, but a bit of a sausage fest, don'tcha think?

Andre Norton?
C. J. Cherryh?
Ursula K. Le Guin.

and the list goes on!

#1, re the blog post... Preach it! I think CJ Cherryh was one of the few who made aliens individuals (even the methane breathers, whose thought patterns were so alien to us we barely understood them)

TBF, a lot of other authors have, especially recently; but that's the one that popped into my head.

Starting a re-read.

Off the top of my head, I know of several authors who used linguistics as part of their works - J.R.R. Tolkien, of course, CS Lewis, Frank Herbert, C.J. Cherryh, and Andy Weir. In fact, C.J. Cherryh is a particularly notable example.

Pretty open minded these days. My go-tos are largely fantasy and sci-fi. Pratchett, Glen Cook, CJ Cherryh, Bujold, NK Jemison, Yoon Ha Lee, Martha Wells, Elizabeth Bear, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Miles/Christian Cameron, Christopher Buehlman.

Been itching for a good mystery or heist, too.

And those are different from human arms.

(It'll make more sense in the book I promise.)

My MC gets recruited into the alien's plans.

It's like if I cross how Robin Hobb writes the motivations of defeated peoples crossed with C. J. Cherryh alien mindsets.
