Son has been grinding against a ChessKid bot on the tablet all morning (ignoring opening presents) and he finally stopped when he accomplished his goal - 67 wins - and now he's running around the house in his boxers saying "6-7-6-7-6-7". This generation is so cooked.

My son, who's just turned 5, getting his first win against the 14-year-old ChessMike bot on ChessKid. He missed a few, but I'm pretty pleased with his pins!

Chesskid is the standard tho it doesn’t meet your “ideally” quals. A few weeks after your kid starts it he will beat your ass so bad you’ll remember it forever

A few years ago my son used the ChessKid app that has videos and you can play against bots or your parents and he seemed to enjoy. I do think a lot of the content is behind a membership fee of like $50/year

For teaching/learning chess, I personally find all of the Jeff Coakley books great for kids. Digitally, My ten year old likes the chesskid products, especially chess adventure. Plays every day.
Note - they signed Ts and Cs with my previous district so I trust their safety with my kids data too.

What we need is strict principles for online spaces for kids. Two good examples are Scratch (free and accessible) and chesskid[dot]com (partially free, but primarily a subscription).
Neither allow direct messaging and any new content reported as being abusive or harmful is immediately taken down.
