If an outcome of this war is a loss of meaningful freedom of navigation in one of the world’s key energy chokepoints, that’s a world historical scale defeat for the United States (i.e., *the* “freedom of navigation” power).
Having Iran tax the strait of Hormuz would be an enormous strategic defeat for the USA and extra perilous for Iran’s neighbors. But it is also a staggering blow to Israel.

I've discussed this elsewhere, but history has shown that every system has chokepoints, and you can bet that there will be legal attempts to hunt down and find those chokepoints. There are ways to deal with these, but they are... very tricky with tradeoffs.
