Nearly 23,000 Alabama students will receive as much as $125 million in public money for private-school tuition and other education expenses in the first year of the state's new school choice program.

About 14,000 students who received money under the CHOOSE Act plan to attend private schools. About 10,000 of those already do.

A lack of oversight and some questionable accreditation methods should concern taxpayers footing the bill for private education.
