A pre-Columbian jade "axe-god" celt, originating from the Guanacaste-Nicoya region of Costa Rica, dating approximately between 500 and 1000 CE. Carved from a mottled green hard stone, commonly referred to as jade or jadeite. Styled in the traditional celt (polished axe blade) shape, where the lower portion is left as a plain, smooth blade. The upper third features an abstract anthropomorphic or avian figure with an elaborate headdress, incised geometric lines, and small drilled circular eyes. These artifacts were typically worn as high-status pendants or used in ritual and burial practices across ancient Costa Rica and Mesoamerica. The symbolism behind these unique artifacts centers on three main concepts: The underlying shape of the pendant is a celt (a polished stone axehead). In Mesoamerican and Intermediate Area iconography, the axe is intimately linked with agricultural clearing, lightning, and rain gods. Because the green color of the jade resembled growing crops, these objects symbolize fertility, life, and successful maize cultivation. The top half of the pendant is carefully carved into a figure—often combining human attributes with predatory birds (like owls or toucans) or reptiles. This artistic blending represents a shamanic transformation. It signifies a ruler or shaman's ability to cross the boundary between the physical world and the spiritual realm to secure cosmic balance. Jade was incredibly rare and difficult to carve without metal tools. Owning an elaborate piece like this served as an undeniable badge of high social status, wealth, and political authority. They were worn publicly as elite pectoral ornaments and were frequently buried with their owners to accompany them into the afterlife.

I'm proud to be Nicaraguan. Of my indigenous roots. The tragedy is that because of colonizers, our culture was wiped out or assimilated into Catholic religion. My indigenous roots could be Chorotega, Nicarao, & possibly Miskitu, but I won't ever know for sure because of what happened to my people.

As a white-passing Latine of mixed descent, I'm reclaiming my Indigeneity.

I'm still researching my ties, possibly to the Chorotega or Miskito tribes. My relatives don't know either. The history of Spanish colonialism and miscegenation complicates things.

But I want to learn and embrace my roots.

Today especially, I want to remind myself that I have native roots in Central America. Possibly the Chorotega but due to the horrors of colonization, I may never know for sure.

I've also resided on the lands of the Agawam, Nipmuc, Pocumtuc, Tequesta, Miccosukee, Seminole, Mascogo, & Taino peoples.
