This exquisitely carved 5000-year-old ceremonial macehead is one of Neolithic Europe’s finest works of art. Excavated from the passage tomb at Knowth in the Boyne Valley, Ireland, it is less than 8cm long and made of a hard, mottled cream-coloured flint. #FindsFriday #Neolithic

The Knowth Macehead • c.3300-2800 BC

It has been described as one of the greatest surviving artworks from Neolithic Europe.

All six sides of the flint macehead are delicately decorated. From this view, it appears like a human face, with the hole for the shaft as a mouth.

I'm very slowly making a flint Maesmor-type Neolithic macehead. But I'm not sure the form of the blank is right to cut the lozenges, so I've made a plaster cast to practice.

This #findsfriday we have polished oval macehead of limestone containing the fossil stromatoporoid (A shallow marine sponge). Containing traces of bronze, it found with a primary male inhumation in Bowl Barrow Wilsford G5, excavated by William Cunnington in 1808.

This intricately carved marble macehead was found at the #Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük 🇹🇷 in 2016. The level of detail and craftsmanship is unparalleled in the Neolithic of southwest Asia.

For #findsFriday the Garboldisham Macehead, 3483-3104 BC
The spirals incised into red deer antler share affinities with those of Newgrange and suggest interaction between East Anglia and Ireland in the middle Neolithic. A beautiful object.

Big news from MaceHead! A new automatic flask sampler was installed as part of #NUBICOS, making it a European ‘supersite’ for greenhouse gas monitoring and radiocarbons.
Power outages, icy roads and record wind speeds - what was it like installing a flask sampler right before #StormEowyn hit the west coast of Ireland?

Find out more about the Mace Head 'supersite', a key part of the #NUBICOS project.

This Late Neolithic greenstone pestle mace head was discovered at Tarmac’s Broom South Quarry. Interestingly it was found in a Roman ditch and seems to have been “curated” by someone during the Roman period before being purposely placed in the ditch.

Nice project by Joe Fenwick with the glass sculptor Fred Curtis to recreate it here:

It did establish that it was likely ground rather than carved.

This particular macehead was part of an elaborate assemblage of objects buried beneath a house floor including four obsidian projectile points, two flint blades and a basket containing the skull of a young adult male.

Did you know there really was a Scorpion King in Ancient Egypt? This macehead depicts him wearing the crown of Upper Egypt, with a scorpion next to his head.

Groundstone specialist Cristina Tsoraki's analysis indicates that the macehead has no signs of usewear and that it was probably buried not long after it was made (illustration by @kjkillackey.bsky.social)
