A thing about religion people hate to acknowledge regardless of how they view religion is that most of it is just advertising. Christianity got big cuz of that. Those images on church windows and agreed upon depictions of figures from The Bible? The ones in paintings? CHRISTIANTIY PAID FOR THAT!

Theological progressives like myself hold Scripture in high regard also— because we read it seriously. Seriously enough to study its languages, wrestle with its contradictions… challenge its abuses, and trust that the Spirit still speaks through its pages.

The republican christians we see blatantly ignoring the teachings of their supposed savior jesus christ are practicing fascism not christiantiy.

This is a cool thread to see, I think theres enough evidence to say that when Christiantiy is adopted by a local population, practices from the previous regional religion often get adapted to fit within the new framework.
But this is entirely speculative. We have no written sources about pre-Christian Irish religion, so it’s possible this was an entirely “tribal” religion with no “archaic” elements or institutional structure. That would explain how pre-Christian elements such as the Tuatha Dé Danann etc were kept.

it is not the Christianity many of US were borught up on. have been a catholic all of my life.this is not christiantiy any more. it is a pseudo-religion broken up into cults.they all claim to follow the teaching of jesus.but THERE interpetation even when you can how texts of how they are wrong.

that's not at all what's being complained about when I do it or when I see it on my feed

I don't mean to imply that LotR is incongruent with Christiantiy broadly or Catholicism specifically - just that it brings out the "long defeat" in ways that the Catholicism of my upbringing never did and that I find missing from most (not all) Christianities I've come in contact with.

I came to Christ in a suburban church and stumbled upon what seemed to be a virtuous embrace of the color-blind Church. I believed it was "the" biblical approach, the only legitimate way forward.
