While you are generally correct, Constantine I didn't see the end of the empire as inevitable. The Western empire wouldn't fall for another 150 years. He probably saw nascent Christianty as a powerful ally and a way to legitimize his elevation.

Looking at american "christianty" I find it quite reliving that I was brought up making my own choice and became an atheist through and through.

I've got no beef with the mormons but they are not christian. They have their own scripture. Their own prophets. That's not a different interpretation of christianty, that's a whole different religion.
