#Churchwardens
The churchwardens at St Nicholas, Teddington took the instruction to have the Royal Arms on display incredibly seriously so in 1689 when William and Mary came to the throne they had this rather jolly example painted.

Ecclesiastical, not civil, but anyone on a local government electoral register can vote for their local parish church’s churchwardens, if that scratches an electoral itch

Years ago I found a note in the parish register of Glenfield in Leicestershire which instantly became one of my favourite Civil War commentaries:

'Churchwardens, not any; because
distractions many; & distructions mightie'.

I've returned to that document, explored other pages nearby, and found...

I bet the churchwardens are careworn people. Careworn, soggy people.

I really need to go through these filing cabinets more often and sort them out...

Apparently in 1904 we spent £8 exactly on "Ringing and Blowing". You can't make it up.

The Archdeacon made a joke in his sermon last night that the Archdeacon is always watching, and all the other Churchwardens laughed, but the window of the Archdeacon's office looks directly out at St Nicks, so the thing is that in our case they kind of always are...

Bursting in to the church minutes before the swearing in of Churchwardens and when the Priest went: "cutting it a bit fine, Jay" I went "I drove straight from the mountains for this" Then a friend appeared and handed me a real shirt which I put on over my hiking clothes in the middle of the service.

Quite apart from the other problems with this argument, Protestants who are not Evangelicals exist, and have been part of America for longer.

George Washington was a churchwarden! Why are no Supreme Court justices churchwardens, then?
Evangelicals have plenty to offer: they’re white, first of all. And secondly, they’re not ‘elite’. Thirdly, they know how to appeal to uneducated idiots.

I’m sold, sign me up!

Church of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent in Eu. The churchwardens' pew. Woodwork (1731). Craftsman: Adrien Le Jeune of Abbeville. This was the seat reserved for the *marguilliers*—the parish notables.

I feel this headline is a bit unfair to churchwardens, who are generally excellent people and hardly ever involved in things that sound a lot like laundering dirty political donations…
The man whose firm made the donations will not discuss where the money came from, nor his ties to wealthy Farage allies who may not hold citizenship ⬇️

#TinyJoys: getting the service plan for Holy Week sorted across both churches.

Enormous joys: churches - and especially churchwardens - who know how to compromise with good grace, and maintain a sense of perspective.

I hear other Churchwardens bitch about the Faculty system all the time but as someone who has had to do a LOT of them, some which were granted and some which were not (one famously), I have to say... It's a good system. It's flawed, but it works, and it's IMPORTANT we have checks and rules in place.
If they lose that exemption, and become subject to listed building controls, the adaptability of the church will atrophy. Imagine a church during a pandemic, unable to install WiFi and stream services. Imagine a church serving pensioners and children- with no heating.

The amount of times I've photographed a medieval church and been asked by churchwardens if I want to lights putting on. I've refused every time! They always, always look better in natural light. The moment you flick the lights on, that magic feeling of the ancient space vanishes.
