Alleluia! A joy to license Vaughan Pollard as Vicar for the five parishes of The Moorland Benefice (part-time). Suitably for the top of the Moors, visibility on the journey was down to 5 metres but cleared as we approached the church! #ProperYorkshireVicaring

Good to mark the missional feast of Paulinus, and my second bishopversary but reflecting at Churchwardens training on this vital, ancient, missional office. Am so grateful to God for lay and ordained colleagues across the archdeaconry of Cleveland and @dioceseofyork.bsky.social as a whole.

Really good to meet the Major Churches team yesterday.
@allsaintsmaidstone.bsky.social has so much that needs doing, but also so much that could be done!

Ecclesiastical, not civil, but anyone on a local government electoral register can vote for their local parish church’s churchwardens, if that scratches an electoral itch

Our thanks to the Churchwardens from the Croydon Episcopal Area who joined us for a training morning at St Michael and All Angels Croydon where they learned about: their role and responsibilities; church buildings, Faculties, List A and List B; and managing difficult conversations and relationships.

Happy International Day of Older People – and thanks to all the older people who give time, skill and wisdom as volunteers in @dioceseofnorwich.bsky.social Like Anna and Simeon, recognising the saviour when they saw him as a baby, older people still point towards Jesus and invite all to follow him.

An 1826 Norwich newspaper report reveals an early attempt to investigate what we might now call benefit fraud, involving home visits, eligibility checks and the proposed publication of claimants’ names.

Two years today since I was licenced to these wonderful parishes. Being their parish priest is a daily delight. I am very thankful, and looking forward to many more years to come.

Yes, my own view is that this is a bad idea generally (even when they are trained). In the Anglican context, churchwardens are much better placed to act as line managers.

Not least for the benefit of the clergy

Agree with everything here. I am blessed to have had some great churchwardens and vicars over the years but I also have supported other CYF workers who sadly have had difficult experiences.

As always, join a union.

Fabulous. I wrote a blog about female parish clerks for @friendlesschurches.bsky.social so I’m a little obsessed by these examples! friends.devstarslwda.dev/story/a-fema...
"A Female Parish Clerk?!"
Until the 20thC parish clerks and churchwardens were almost always men. But a few women broke with that convention, like Mary Flint, female parish clerk of Caldecote, Herts

Didn’t get back from a day’s church crawling until nearly 7, so listening to the Last Night on the wireless while cooking, snacks and muscadet on the go. Cheers! Thanks to Ride and Stride, we got into every church bar the last one. Met some lovely churchwardens/volunteers. Hope La France is good!

Would you like to know how they make churchwardens?
I was informed about 9/11 at work, by a colleague who was the rudest and funniest person I have ever known. He told me, as an afterthought, via hand movements as he descended from my floor on an escalator. The epitome of bad taste. He paid for thus by dying young only a few years later.

One of our churchwardens was a barrister working in the Family Courts until she retired last year. I certainly never got the impression from her that she was underworked, especially when she often said after a PCC meeting that she still had a couple of hours' brief-reading to do that evening ...
