Rev stuff is very tired to me. CivWar stuff is compelling because I genuinely don't understand how we got to that point, given how intractably stupid most white people these days are. How did we get enough people willing to die to end slavery when today we won't even wear a facemask in a pandemic

Yeah, before you fantasize about CivWar 2 travel to a country that actually has that going on. When i was in the service I spent time in the Balkans and in the Sinai. I also did some hiking around Mali in the 90s - ever see a mock execution - its not a fun thing. You don't want any of that here.

The CivWar Institute has announced the schedule for the 2025 conference, which will honor the life and legacy of its former director Peter Carmichael, who passed away last summer. I am honored to be included among the speakers. I look forward to honoring my friend. www.gettysburg.edu/civil-war-in...

Wow! Congress's irrelevance starts @ Bleeding Kansas (1857), thru CivWar, w/ a peak at Congressional Reconstruction (1867). Congressional dysfunction in Panic of 1893 makes presidency singular focus of interest ever since. Prez peaks at Spanish-Cuban-Amer War (1902) & FDR in Great Depression (1933)
Remember this beautiful corpus, containing 20M public domain newspapers scans from the Library of Congress (~1800-1963)?
We created a Ngram Viewer-like app to plot word frequencies over time in the corpus. Look how "president" diverges from "congress"

Off to Madrid on 18Feb to participate in the 2025 Jarama March, to celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in defending Madrid in the early days of the Spanish CivWar. Concerned I might encounter pro-Franco protesters. Now I’m worried I will be seen as an adversary by the people I want to support.

Read American history, especially Civil War, when blood was shed here. Also the progressive era, and New Deal, for the realization that smart people can do good things quickly. Howard Zinn for an overview, Eric Foner for civwar, reconstruction. We’ve faced so much so far. Not hopeless.

There’s a HUGE difference between “cosplay” & living history. I definitely don’t disagree with your discomfort at the applause, but we’re not taking “Comic-Con.” Living historians portray both sides of U.S. military conflicts: RevWar, 1812, CivWar, etc., to educate the public. Just noting.

The only thing we haven't tried is actually punishing insurrectionists, not the minions but the actual ringleaders, from the CivWar through today. This time has to be different.
Elon Musk belongs behind bars—along with these clowns.

When the time comes, I’m backing a president who gives zero f*cks about “looking partisan.” Someone who’ll do what’s right, appoint an AG with a spine, and restore justice—no matter what it takes or how it looks.
