At some point, somebody that just lost their government job will decide their next one will be as an elected official and I will be HERE for it.

I don't often post about my real life job, but I'm starting to wonder if civictech is cooked. Finding a place in civictech that replaces ego with curiosity, micro-management with self-management and top down design with human-centered design seems impossible these days.

Excited to meet @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social in person and talk about our family's journey in early intervention. I'm all for a Mayor who wants to improve service delivery. Thanks Sen Gonzalez for making it happen!

I think this… above everything else.. is the clearest differentiator between DOGE and people at USDS/DDS/18F & other #civictech orgs.

Civic technologists care deeply about the missions of the agencies where they’re placed - mostly because career civil servants care deeply about their missions.
Yes, he told us both that he would never trust his own script _and_ that he wanted it to be rolled out across the government.

many of us call this #civictech or #pitech. here are four great starter packs.

1/ 📚 Today we're sharing something we've been working on since 2019: an oral history of how the U.S. Digital Service came to be.

Nearly 50 conversations with the people who were there from 2009-2015, telling their stories in their own words. 🧵

Good. Having worked closely with Technologists and UX experts from the REAL U.S. Digital Service, I am psyched to see this! 🫡🇺🇸 #WeTheBuilders #CivicTech www.theverge.com/news/617014/...

This is a fantastic point -- I think it better describes why I'm emphatically opposed to LLMs replacing front line government staff. The problems you could run into at a field office for almost any service can get *weird* and it's super easy for an LLM to mess it up. #civictech
i feel compelled to remind everyone that chatgpt/LLMs are functionally the *opposite* of an actual expert.

the more your problems are unusual or novel, the more likely LLMS are to be wrong. they are least helpful when it's most important

For @liberalcurrents.com, I make an argument that we need to bring back the OTA. If we’re gonna fight about tech, Congress needs technologists wearing Congressional jerseys.

If Congress is to tackle issues from DOGE sabotage to AI to social media, it needs to resurrect its Office of Technology Assessment.

There’s a lot of ‘absolutely the fuck not’ going on today - but from a service delivery #civictech perspective… absolutely the fuck not.

1) States already have access to the Do Not Pay system that prevents fraud

2) There’s a principal of least info needed - in order to protect security/privacy
May 10, 2025 at 12:31 AM
After it’s over, really over, one of the tasks will be getting a small army of cybersecurity people & going over everything DOGE touched with a fine tooth comb and a willingness to nuke infrastructure from orbit & start fresh if necessary #civictech
While DOGE was under a TRO at SSA, they entered a "voter data agreement" with an org aiming to "overturn election results"--without review or approval.

SSA also concedes they "have not been able to determine what data [DOGE] shared" & have no way to know.

IRS employees anticipated this anti-consumer move and open-sourced the direct tax filing software. Hopefully, some developers in the USA can pick up this project. It would make a great #civictech project to give people a free or low-cost way to file taxes. bsky.app/profile/soci...
For something comparable, look at the redundant ~$15 billion(!!!) tax preparation business in the US. Over the decade, people in that industry have spent an ungodly amount of money lobbying to keep the US government from offering a free tax filing service for everyone. www.zdnet.com/article/irs-...

The administration has ended free income tax filing, but that didn't stop the IRS from open-sourcing its frontend Direct File tax program.

good points, & the cybernetic one relates too to the discarding of UX as a practice in tech

ugh, I need to write something longform from the #civictech perspective (well, my #civictech perspective - there are multiple & some of them are unfortunately ready to make bedfellows with the wreckers)
