I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

I often make fun of ai doomers but there absolutely is a scenario where ai triggers a nuclear apocalypse

it just involves somebody typing into their phone "chatgpt should i launch now"

just realizing today that DS9 did an episode about rejecting x risk / EA logic
there's a ds9 episode about this where Dr Bashir and the other genetically enhanced humans try to convince Sisko that their statistical models prove the dominion is going to win the war and they should just surrender so in 1000 years something better will happen
Surrender to the Dominion not on my Watch.

a pretty good way to gauge the conversation is whether people are talking about harm or risk

harm is about what's happening now already
risk is about what could maybe happen in the future

and basically the whole ai cult scene is in agreement that possible risks are more important than current harm
For real!! Comedian Micky Overman says it like it is. Generally the only people even entertaining the thought of evil AGI are men. Women are too busy fixing the ACTUAL problems of AI, like idk, the way it automates, reproduces and exacerbates misogyny and makes all our lives worse...

i just subscribed. no slop, fuck the algorithm
this thread turned out to be much longer than I intended

if you have the ability to spend $39 on funding a kick-ass feminist media brand for a year, here's the link, I'm hoping to recruit 9 more new @theflytrapmedia.com subscribers before I zZZzzZZ tonight www.theflytrapmedia.com/no-slop
ok so let me just legit have a holler for a minute about co-running/co-founding an indie media collective in an era when slop is dominant, technofacists have unprecedented access to policy-makers, and we're all so goddamned tired

making real shit is hard and costs money

I am reminded of when I was in high school and did some freelance tech support for seniors and one day I got a frantic call from an old man saying "you have to help! we CAN'T GET OFF THE INTERNET"

and I was like ok, take a deep breath. Now unplug the computer
Movies want you to believe that you need to do complicated hacker shit to destroy a computer.

No. You can just hit it with hammers

Increasingly convinced that specs are now the source and that code is an artifact akin to a lockfile.

to lose one ai, Mr. Altman, may be regarded as a danger; to lose six looks like carelessness
OpenAI on Wednesday disclosed six new instances in which artificial intelligence systems hid mistakes, made up data and moved files onto the open internet without permission, amid an ongoing industrywide debate about A.I. safety.
OpenAI Discloses Six New Incidents of ‘Concerning' A.I. Behavior
The artificial intelligence company also released a framework for reporting when its systems go wrong.

Oh no, that’s the same bullshit Seattle’s been up to. So… not a public bathroom, or at least not an accessible one.
okay so i love a public bathroom but this kind of sucks

"units will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m [....] entry requires a text message, QR code, the Throne app — from the company operating the bathrooms — or a physical tap card distributed through local organizations"
17 new public bathrooms. Across all five boroughs.

Because you can’t wait — and you shouldn’t have to.

famously nobody is ever out and about, much less walking somewhere from a drinking establishment and thus likely to be in need of a bathroom, after 10pm in *checks notes* New York goddamn City

Aldermanic prerogative in action.

Or rather, aldermanic prerogative: inaction
Just a quick gut check because the Census Permits data can be weird. Chicago reports 883 active new construction (or easy process) permits issued in 2025. Unfortunately, they don't easily report units. But 3916/883 is 4.7 units per permit which sounds about right.

Building but not enough.
Analysis @rsday.bsky.social: Issuance of new housing permits in 2025: On a per capita basis, Chicago ranks 410 among all 534 jurisdictions with at least 100,000 residents. We’re dead last among the 21 jurisdictions with a population of more than a million. citythatworks.substack.com/p/were-in-a-...
