#Classicist
As an erstwhile classicist this thread delights me
My favorite trick or treat story of all time:
I was in middle school trick or treating with a friend in a not-too-busy neighborhood.
A guy answered his door, and said “I’m so sorry, I just moved to America. I didn’t know about this, and didn’t buy candy, but I have something I can give you!”

Glass, Irony & God is perfect for that double perspective. The classicist and poet sides illuminate each other.

The Tennessee Titans have a player named Dike (pronounced in correct ancient Greek) and my Classicist brain hurts.

I often wonder what Thanksgiving is like with his sister Donna, classicist, academic, and author of Not All Dead White Men.

You can’t take your eyes off him any second he’s on screen, even smaller early parts, like in Excalibur and I, Claudius.

Something I cling strongly to is that, much like every Classicist thinks that the discipline started dying just before they joined it, every member of Starfleet does the "remember when we used to be explorers?" at literally every era of Starfleet.

(Disclaimer: I am not a classicist nor particularly educated on Ancient or Mythical Greece beyond what I've read in the past few months. This is just my opinion; if I got anything egregiously wrong please let me know and I will amend that opinion in short order.)

Just encountered "gnoseology" which, in context, seems to just mean epistemology (from an early 20th century French classicist, basically, from the root gnosis instead of epistemē)

Rhetorical question: Who talks this way?

“ @twhittermarsh.bsky.social —a classicist at University Of Cambridge …offers a compelling answer in his new book, Rome’s Age of Revolution: Augustus, Empire and the Making of Christianity. To wit, Christianity took much of its shape from the cult of Augustus, first emperor of Rome.”

Augustus was seen as a descendant of the gods who would go on to redefine authority. New research posits that his rule paved the way for Jesus

You young rapscallions change the names of everything these days. I’m a classicist, dammit! It’ll always be shithole to me!

It does make me think back to this episode of the Last Word about classicist Pat Easterling. When asked what was the point of classics, @wmarybeard.bsky.social recounts that Pat answered ‘it teaches you to read difficult things’. Maybe we need to lean into that more?

The last 6 retirements in my partner’s department have not been replaced. Now there is one classicist (in a religion and classics department). They can’t run with just one—especially with requiring at least 5 majors/year. Not enough majors=close department

As I said, I haven’t read the Economist piece yet (claiming that modern AI is “best understood as a technological version of the Homeric songs that inspired Alexander’s conquests” will be red rag to various classicist bulls…), but your blog does a much better job of explaining your actual argument.

Went to a local bookstore earlier to get something I ordered from them. While there I spied this on a shelf. I know and have used classicist Anne Carson in my scholarship and teaching, so I figured it was a good day to get some Nobel Laureate Anne Carson.

I’m a Classicist. My “non-fiction” includes historical sources which put the destruction of one of the greatest civilisations down to “sea peoples”.

I also dabble in hidden homosexuality.

This is the only kind of non-fiction that should be considered for good reading 🤣
Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?

Oh dear... I'd misread crime and graffiti as a single word - crimegraffiti! and started to wonder what new Classicist shenanigans you were going to spring next on the world.

(Have a great trip and a good evening!)
