Lots of Claviceps spartinae on the Spartina in the Southport saltmarsh today. On a few plants the Claviceps was hosting Fusarium heterosporum too!

found two Claviceps-parasitising fungi on the same plant in September this year. Fusarium heterosporum which colors the whole Claviceps sclerotium orange was the second. It has nice banana-shaped 3-septate conidia. #fungifriends

Wildrice Ergot - Claviceps zizaniae
This sclerotia forming fungus grows on members of the wildrice genus (Zizania), and I believe it's one of the largest Claviceps species. Not sure if it causes convulsions, hallucinations and gangrene like its close relatives, but I wouldn't wanna find out.

Epicoccum andropogonis, a fungus parasitising Claviceps, a fungal parasite of grasses. Here on Glyceria maxima (Liesgras). One of two Claviceps parasites I found this day in September this year on the same plant. I really like the brainlike structure (and its old name Cerebella). #Fungifriends

After the rye plant contracts ergot, the fungus grows and replaces shoots on the grain with sclerotia.
The presence of darker shoots on rye was probably thought to be the product of overexposure to the sun, so it was most likely eaten despite being poisonous.
