Africa launches long-delayed energy bank to finance fossil fuel projects
Both sides have pledged to strengthen investment and trade cooperation to make cleantech supply chains more resilient to shocks What’s on the climate calendar for November 2026? After the US midterms and the launch of the COP30 roadmaps, the climate world’s attention turns to Antalya for COP31 COP17 delivers fragile deal to boost conservation and funding for nature After a two-week stalemate, countries agreed to invite wealthy emerging economies like China to assume donor status and help fund biodiversity protection as finance falls short Editor’s Desk: COP reform is happening quietly, behind the headlines It may seem like little has changed in how the UN climate summits are run, but there’s been a gradual shift as action becomes as important as negotiation From Australia to Chile, our cities are driving a green investment boom Cities’ climate commitments are set to generate trillions of dollars in demand for clean tech and green infrastructure, creating huge opportunities for businesses and investors Africa wants adaptation finance on COP31 agenda, raising risk of a fight The African Group wants dedicated space on tripling adaptation finance, the Green Climate Fund and trade, setting up a possible clash Stalemate on finance at COP17 nature talks exposes...

Venture Kick backs Apolarion with €164K to advance plasma-based seed treatment
Swiss cleantech startup Apolarion, a spin-off from EPFL, has received €164,000 (CHF 150,000) from Venture Kick to advance its chemical-free seed treatment technology. Founded by Jesus Poley and Luke Simons, Apolarion is developing a modular device that uses cold atmospheric plasma to eliminate harmful microorganisms from seeds without chemical treatments. Protecting seeds from disease is essential for maintaining healthy crops and reliable harvests. However, conventional seed treatments often rely on chemical coatings that can leave harmful residues in the soil, while heat-based alternatives require significant energy and may not always be effective. These limitations create challenges for high-value seeds and the growing demand for more sustainable agricultural practices. Apolarion aims to address these challenges through a technology that uses only air and electricity to generate reactive particles capable of neutralising pathogens while preserving the seeds' ability to germinate. The device is designed for low energy consumption and flexible application, offering an alternative to conventional chemical and heat-based treatments. The company is initially focusing on the Swiss and European markets, aiming to provide seed treatment companies with more sustainable solutions for protecting crops and improving agricultural yields. Commenting on the support received from Venture Kick, Luke Simons, CEO and co-founder of...

Canada, EU agree deeper cooperation on energy and cleantech supply chains
Canada and the European Union's commitment to strengthen cooperation on energy security and the energy transition lays the foundation to put clean growth and climate priorities at the heart of their alliance, according to experts. In a seven-page joint statement agreed at the end of a two-day summit in Montreal on Friday, both sides committed to work more closely on investment in critical minerals, green grids, energy sources, battery storage and the protection of energy infrastructure. They agreed to assess opportunities for long-term energy connectivity across the Atlantic, including through a feasibility study on liquefied gas (LNG) exports to Europe. The statement also includes a pledge to “deepen targeted industrial cooperation” on technology value chains and “address bilateral trade barriers”. “Canada and the European Union have sent a clear and unwavering signal that closer cooperation on decarbonisation and climate resilience will be central to their new strategic alliance,” said Canadian Climate Institute president Rick Smith. “The task now is to turn talk into action.” Foundation for climate action The EU and Canada's “alliance for the future” aims to deepen their partnership across investment, trade and economic security to weather geopolitical tensions and global threats, including “the existential threat of the...
