I think the vision is that the patching is mathematically supposed to happen by specifying how to glue regions along common boundaries and boundaries-of-boundaries and so on, where algebraically the codim 1 layer corresponds to Tomita-Takesaki theory.
But all this hiding in a Lagrangian!

When some larger nonabelian G is higgsed down to a U(1)⊂G, the low-energy theory is a U(1)-gauge theory with defects, which can include a magnetic monopole (codim 3). But if you break U(1) down to a discrete subgroup (or the trivial one), I agree only codim 2 occurs.

Second: In QFT, there's the issue of Lorentz invariance (diffeomorphism invariance in GR). Temperature doesn't make sense without a Hilbert space + Hamiltonian, which requires a slice of constant time (i.e. foliating spacetime hypersurfaces of codim 1).

Anyway, I haven't actually done any homotopy theory here, just a bunch of calculations using the explicit/algebraic defintion of P^i on a polynomial ring. But it's been really fun! And I think I'm close to showing that the vanishing locus of all {P^i(coeff of char poly)} has codim n(n+1)/2

Hm, that one I'd have to think about a bit more.

I guess, for ex, if there were three vars and two of the partials shared a factor, then in the subvariety defined by that factor the singular locus has codim 1 (since that would the be defined solely by the vanishing of the other partial)

Le distributeur Auchan a annoncé être en pleine négociation avec le groupe Rocca pour reprendre l’exploitation des magasins de l’enseigne en Corse. Le distributeur Auchan a annoncé être entré jeudi "en négociations exclusives" avec le groupe Rocca pour reprendre l'exploitation des magasins de l'enseigne en Corse, que Rocca venait d'acheter auprès du groupe Casino il y a six mois. Casino possédait une filiale en Corse, Codim 2, qui y exploitait plus d'une quinzaine de magasins sur l'île, dont des hypermarchés, sous des marques de son groupe. Cette filiale a été cédée en septembre au groupe Rocca, propriété de l'entrepreneur Patrick Rocca, pour qu'ils les transforment en magasins franchisés de l'enseigne Auchan. **Assurer la pérennité de ces magasins** Presque six mois après la finalisation de la cession, le distributeur Auchan veut reprendre à son franchisé Rocca l'exploitation de ses magasins, afin "d'assurer la pérennité et le développement de ces magasins." Selon le média spécialisé La Lettre, un conflit existe entre Rocca et Auchan Retail sur le paiement des marchandises. Joint par l'AFP, le distributeur Auchan n'a pas souhaité commenter davantage son projet de reprise. La réalisation de l'opération "devrait intervenir après l'information et la consultation des instances représentatives du personnel et sous réserve de l'obtention de l'autorisation par les autorités de concurrence compétentes", a rappelé Auchan dans un communiqué. Codim 2 avait réalisé en 2023 un chiffre d'affaires hors taxes de 332 millions d'euros. Casino a multiplié les cessions en 2024 pour tenter de survivre à un endettement devenu intenable, vendant notamment la quasi-totalité des magasins français grand format, le cœur historique de son activité, à Intermarché, Auchan et Carrefour. "biequidimensional" sounds very stupid (and it is) but it's just equidimensional (every irreducible component has the same dimension) & catenary (for every irred Y < Z, all maximal chains of irreds Y < Y1 < ... < Yn < Z have the same length) & the dimension formula codim(Y, Z) = dim Z - dim Y holds
