New preprint! 🥳🎉 We looked at viral coinfection patterns at the largest scale ever in wildlife. We found a strong association among CoVs, PMVs, and influenza A, and higher coinfection rates in wildlife trade; plus, evidence that bats accumulate persistent infections. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Protective measures you can take include:
- Avoiding sick or dead animals
- Avoiding uncooked food product
- Wearing a well-fitting mask, gloves, and other PPE
- Getting your seasonal flu vaccination (to reduce the risk of coinfection)

Because COVID isn't seasonal and there was a surge in summer/fall. Recent/repeated infection/coinfection with COVID could make winter flu more severe. Also, the next major SARS-CoV-2 variant hasn't arrived yet (still Pirola variant soup).

Jennifer Nuzio of Brown University said we have a lot of immunity built up from the big summer c19 wave. I don't buy it. Immunity doesn't last 6 months. It must be nature of current mutations. @michael-hoerger.bsky.social @tryangregory.bsky.social
Covid isn’t as bad this winter. Flu is worse. Here’s why.
The covid wave this winter is less severe compared with previous years, with hospitalization rates down and wastewater levels lower.

I'm guessing immunity theft, coinfection, and minimizing infectious disease weren't mentioned?

I was reading an article about children suffering measles and mpox coinfection. (DRC)

B) Coinfection. Flu + COVID can make severity worse than infection with just one of these alone. There is still a lot of COVID this winter on top of a major surge of flu.

Shigella was able to teach its cousin how to make shigatoxin because they're so closely related, it's not like wildly different microbes will be able to do the same thing.

But, blast someone's immune system and they can now host multiple strains of a single pathogen.

It's called coinfection

yeah if they have different strains coinfection allows the virus to recombine

The first hour after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection represents the most vulnerable window for potential coinfection of already infected cells !!! 😨

A very surprising study 💥

Hans took it a step further and did a coinfection, we can see each phage but the rate of coinfection was higher than standard Poisson would predict. Suggestive of some factor that means if 1 phage can get in so can another. We’re moving from petriseq to PIPSEQ method thanks to recent MIRA 3/3

i) The "punk variant" phase: a variant becomes highly divergent within a single host, either through recombination during coinfection or within-host evolution during a persistent infection.

"We find that coinfection is rare because viral infections are rare, but coinfection is more common than expected by random chance – especially among coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and influenza A virus." Further finding: wild animals in captivity have a significantly higher rate of coinfection. 🧪
