I bet they leave these little notes, tell tale 🐾🐾 on the seal, coral envelopes with smudges, the distinct cockling on the envelopes, sometimes the formatting is basic.

If warping is your problem, you could try different methods of stretching it. I love using wooden frames that prevent 80% of cockling while working very wet, and it stretches back perfectly when dry.

It's got to be getting on for 40 years since I was last there. As I hit a big number next year it's on the list for a possible visit, albeit if I go I'll neither get to go cockling on Ryde beach with my godfather nor enjoy my Granny's treacle tart, which are my abiding memories.

In 2006 I was at the London Film Festival screening of GHOSTS, Nick Broomfield's movie about the 2004 Morecambe Bay cockling disaster, which was an excellent movie and very hard to watch (especially as an immigrant) but worse was to come
