I have… questions

I made this statement in 2016: "Databases will soon join mail servers on the list of things you don't ever want to host or manage yourself".

I was way off. Data stores including CockroachDB and Redpanda have reduced most use cases to a single binary, and SQLite finds itself in even more places.

I am realizing there are SO many databases!! That all have a focus (usually around a specific use case, or performance, or distributed nature).

Listing a few to prove the point:

MariaDB, DuckDB, CockroachDB, TiDB, Pinecone, TimescaleDB, ArangoDB, InfluxDB, Weaviate...

Software/Technologies that I really like:
- CockroachDB
- Clickhouse
- React
- DBeaver
- Telegram (Why do all other chat apps suck?)

This is one of the most responsible ways of responding to an open source project you depend on changing their software license. rfd.shared.oxide.computer/rfd/0508

Raft Explained: Leader Election, Log Replication, and Safety

The Raft consensus algorithm explained: raft leader election with randomized timeouts, raft log replication through a strong leader, and the raft safety properties that keep etcd, Consul, and CockroachDB consistent.

yeah, pretty useful to have a computer program that can catch typos. and perhaps more complex sorts of errors. perhaps the kind that multiple human experts with 15 years of experience did not catch

We chose CockroachDB because it was open source and happily paid for the cloud version. The important part of open source for us is the 'credible exit' where we can't be shaken down at some point in the future. We had just started exploring ScyllaDB...

In the written response, the Oxide team explains why they are using the specific open source project, in this case CockroachDB, and why CockroachDB was the best solution for their storage needs.

Oxide is the most trauma-informed company I've ever seen. Having experienced a good chunk of the trauma alongside some of them, I can tell you that, "proprietary bs and bad licensing" is EXACTLY one of the traumas that informed them.

E.g. rfd.shared.oxide.computer/rfd/0508

To be clear, we were not exploring ScyllaDB as a replacement for CockroachDB. Different use case. After the license change, CockroachDB is no longer our default for new work.
