Even without LLMs and codegen, modern high level languages increasingly highly constrained development environments are here. Already your degrees of expensive freedom at the surface syntax and algorithmic level are declining. That's good actually.

i prefer using ast factory functions for doing codegen instead of rawdogging template literals, but pulling in a codegen library like astring hurts me for some reason

Starting tomorrow, you will be able (on linux without cross-compilation) to install and use the Rust GCC backend directly from rustup! To do so:
rustup component add rustc-codegen-gcc

i think the scummiest part of LLM codegen is that you never know if you're getting an amalgamation of some common idea it's been trained on a million copies of, or just getting One Guy's passion project with the identifiers changed a bit, a thing i have overheard happening more than once

i do wish i could do gross c++ macro abuse but i just started abusing attributes and codegen as a substitute
C# isnt the best at anything but it just doesn't have a wealspot other than being a little chatty. Just the perfect workhorse.

remember that codegen involves concatenating two strings together and i hate it -> spends time figuring out a DSL -> wow this DSL sucks for writing codegen code -> forget -> repeat

so codegen LLMs /must/ mostly be trained on code that someone actively decided to share, that its authors wished to contribute to the commons! this industry was just recently fretting over how to support the open source projects it relies on, too. now it exploits them
