Autumn crocus are in full bloom in our garden. These are not a true crocus but a member of the Colchicaceae family. They are lethally toxic, but lovely just the same. #GardeningFeed

Gloriosa superba (#Colchicaceae) also goes in for lepidopteran wing pollination. It’s also a “revolver flower”—the pollinator must rotate around the flower to collect nectar from each of 6 nectaries. While foraging, it will pick up pollen & hit the stigma. #pollination #Lepidoptera #botany 🌾🧪🌱

It's nice to see burned patches in the gorse shrubland (Genista hispanica occidentalis); it allows us to see a rich geophyte flora: Erythronium dens-canis (Liliaceae), Narcissus minor asturiensis (Amaryllidaceae), cf Colchicum montanum (Colchicaceae)

Saffron is harvested from Crocus sativus. They are a different genus, but look remarkably similar. Crocus are part of the Iris family of plants, whereas Colchicums are part of the Colchicaceae family. The Colchicum’s common name, “meadow saffron” is very misleading. sarasaffron.com/saffron/
