I am always amused by French publications that anachronistically ascribe a habit in the #ColonialMaghreb to the Qur'an. In 1903, for example, Pagès stated: "In hot climates coffee is convenient because other liquors are not: Mahomet recommended the use of it wisely in the Coran"! #Orientalism 🗃️☕

The journal "L'Afrique du Nord Illustrée" is a treasure trove for people interested in #DrinkingStudies in the #ColonialMaghreb. This photo from 1910 shows an Algerian worker in one of the many vineyards of the French colony. 🗃️🍷

Another great example is this astonishing 1922 advert for "Mousse d'Islam" (!), an Algerian champagne. The advert depicts a presumably European woman in a turban.
