In addition to the 2 sketches above, there was also one, by Paul d'Espagnat, about an imaginary expedition by the US explorer Robert Peary to the South Pole. Unlike Frederick Albert Cook, Peary made sure to leave absinthe "Oxygénée Cusenier" behind, because it allegedly increased the appetite! 🗃️🍸

I just had a more in-depth look at "Le Sourire" & the hundreds of sketches by various artists about absinthe "Oxygénée Cusenier" seem to be actual advertising - and so many of them are astonishing & deserve to be seen! I will try and turn this slowly into a thread! #DrinkingStudies 🗃️🍸

I just came across this amazing sketch from 1909: It shows the US doctor, explorer & probable fraud Frederick Albert Cook talking about his supposed expedition to the North Pole, stating that his feat was only possible because he took "Oxygénée Cusenier" - a famous absinthe - with him! 🗃️🍸
This image shows a black drawing - on the yellowish page of a newspaper. A dark-haired, bearded man - Frederick Albert Cook - sits at a desk, papers in front of him, a map of the North Pole behind him. In front of him are rows of people, listening to him. They are mostly men, but at least two women can also be seen in the audience. Below him is a caption, that says, in French: "... Having only dried fish and seal oil for food, my wonderful appetite overcame my disgust… Needless to say, I had equipped myself with a few cases of OXYGÉNÉE CUSENIER! It was thanks to this incomparable aperitif that I was able to reach the North Pole! (Enthusiastic cheers.)" This sketch was published in "Le Sourire", on the 25.09.1909, p. 10.

Explorers in hot climates also depended on "Oxygénée Cusenier" according to these strange sketches. This one here, by the French illustrator Falco from 1909, shows an unnamed European explorer in a desert explaining that his endurance was due to this particular brand of absinthe! #DrinkingStudies 🗃️🍸
This image shows a sketch, black on yellowish paper. It shows a man, sitting on a rock, with a black beard and wearing a pith helmet. He is drinking from a glass, while in front of him, on the ground, is a rifle and a blanket, with a pot and a knife on it. Behind him, on the right of the image, sits an ape - possibly a Barbary macaque - which is, however, the same size as the explorer. He sits cross-legged and drinks from a bottle of absinthe. He is copying the explorer, as both of them hold their left hand over their hearts. Behind them is a coastline, with palm trees and, I think, some roman ruins. Below the image, it says, in French: "The Explorer. - The sun, the rain, the fatigue, I fear nothing, thanks to OXYGÉNÉE CUSENIER, and, thank God! I have enough to finish my journey: my bottle is barely started!" This sketch was published in "Le Sourire", on the 17.07.1909, p. 10.

Orientalist themes were commonly used to sell French alcohol. Most often, such adverts showed French alcohol in French colonies, but not always: This 1923 advert for "Rexki", "the king of aperitifs" (by Vitelle) shows an Egyptian man on a camel in front of the pyramids at sunset. #DrinkingStudies 🗃️🍸
