They're dying my chassis a shade of pinkest pink that cannot be represented on digital colorspaces and will make Anish Kapoor disintegrate when he gazes upon it.

love all the css stuff we've been getting lately. nesting and colorspaces and masking and... trig functions...

but look. look. ok. look. can we... look. can we do something about
s with margins inside a
with padding, maybe. this has haunted me for decades

It's incredible how this guy has reacted to being told a basic truth like “numerical error makes statistics unreliable” and a crowd of people trust him because he knows about colorspaces and codecs.
look i'm all bubbled up but can anyone else out there confirm for me that a regular person should know that the stats on mlb.com are fake and thus not rely on them?
oh my god you fucking idiot I am not defending the fucking padres, I’m saying that the information Tim posted is such an incomplete mess that he can’t make a claim either way about the situation and getting people riled up is a pointless endeavor without knowing anything about the data

Real plot nerds might be curious how I got the text labels around the periphery of this to be so orderly. I computed the convex hull of the data then computed 3 expansion shells of that hull. Sequential labels alternate between each of the 3 hulls, and go to the closest spot on the hull.

Sharpening algorithms behave differently in different colorspaces, especially between linear light vs gamma encoded. I feel like this is something most broadcast cameras and LUT boxes get wrong, plus many B4 lenses have intense chromatic aberrations, and graphics are chroma subsamped.

Fellow film tech nerds, I had the incredible honor and pleasure to be invited back to the Team Deakins podcast. This time we discussed maintaining image authorship throughout the pipeline and how colorspaces work.

color spaces hurt my brain. esp. perpetually uniform colorspaces... i'm trying to add comprehensive HDR support to my renderer, and this means that before I even try to handle HDR content I have to change pretty much my entire pipe from swapchain surface setup to adding final color transform shaders

Sure would be nice if Bluesky would support colorspaces in JPGs correctly, I'm not even asking about HDR (which it should also handle)

Here are the two colorspaces side by side. The left is the old one, plain HSV, and the right is okHSL. Looking at this, I feel like there's a bit of a tradeoff - miss that darker mauve on the left, but the more goldenrod yellow and the more solid red are welcome.

Pro-tip: Never learn about colorspaces. "I love learning new things. Why yes, I'll eat that red apple, what a friendly snake!"

::crunch::

"Wait... this apple isn't #ff0000, it's outside the sRGB gamut! Why does everything look terrible? Oh no... do I have to fix years of ad-hoc color handling?"😱

And now I give up. The printer has been moved back to the Windows computer. I thought I had my colorspaces set up correctly, several test prints came out right, but AFAICT it's just that I got lucky in my choice of images. Printers are evil machines and none moreso than a cheap Canon.

Okay, so here's the write up! Thanks to @emarl.bsky.social, I figured out that Firefox was causing the issue.

After changing an obscure setting, things now work properly. I never thought it'd be THE BROWSER with all the colorspaces you have to go through to get a photo done.

Yup. I discovered the linked images were SRGB despite having converted them. I used ImageMagick to bulk convert them and trying again. It appears that even if the color profile is grayscale, if anything is SRGB, Affinity exports it that way even if you tell it to convert the colorspaces on export.

"Science doesn't care about your feelings!"
Quick reminder that our current understanding of colorspaces goes all the way back to experiments that very much relied on subjective experience of a given color as their basis.

oh god, thinking about the colorspaces of people's screens must be a nightmare

this took me a while bc instead of just fixing proj to rec709, i made this support all UE colorspaces+displays by pretty deeply embedding this in the engine, modifying and tweaking a bunch of stuff to make sure it supports all the color gamuts and displays UE supports from film AP0/Ap1 to ol Rec709
