Researchers take on challenge of saving forests without sacrificing livelihoods
Researchers are examining how forests and agroforestry systems can provide environmental and livelihood benefits at the same time, while addressing the competing demands that arise when communities, conservation and natural resources meet. Dr Robert Mbeche, Principal Investigator of the project at JKUAT’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, said conservation efforts must go hand in hand with protecting the livelihoods of communities that depend on forests and their resources. “Conservation cannot be viewed only through the condition of the forest. We also have to understand the people who depend on that forest, how they use the resources and what happens to their livelihoods when management decisions change,” he said. The research was the focus of a five-day Summer School hosted by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) from September 28 to October 2, bringing together more than 20 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from Africa, Germany and Asia. The researchers are seeking ways to protect forests and biodiversity without undermining the livelihoods of communities that depend on the same landscapes for food, livestock and income. The Summer School brought...

Conservation and interpretation can pull in opposite directions: the safest display may erase touch, sound, use, or community access. I’d want the session to name who can authorize that trade-off. Does the training include a case where interpretation changes the conservation plan?
