I studied compsci. There was a class on ethics one year I had high hopes for because it's one hell of an interesting topic and I liked the intersection with humanities. The first lecture, the prof opened with some sexist bullshit. I stopped attending.

All the other students at that point were men.
It happens so often it can be hard to even see. Men having the same experience I am, but I hit a place where the attention becomes unpleasant. Inuendos start. I have to wiggle out of something I did not start (cautiously! trying not to upset any dangerous egos!) so I leave, while the men get to stay

Anyway, I've always been pretty good at coding for a non compsci person, I taught myself a lot as a teen in the 90s. I also didn't even know R Studio existed for the first 2 years I was using R lol. But in the last few weeks I feel like my brain has gone from "I can do some pretty high kicks" to

Ive been talking with the guy who runs it and hes in his final year of compsci doing it for a bit of cv work and a whole lot of passion.

It sorta weirds me out that someone thinks a book on computer science (not languages or algorithms, but the fundamentals) from 2009 is "too old" to be useful. I've found papers from 1959 useful!

My primary concern is that AI is going to take most of our jobs: AI can already do most of my job. Musk says there will be a universal high income, a Star Trek utopia where we don't really need money any more. Pipe dream.

indeed, but can you imagine how better the world would be if folks with humanities phds that pivoted to compsci flooded the tech industry, though?

I’m amazed that there were 35% women in compsci by the 1980s. At my ancient university in the uk then, physical sciences, engineering and compsci seemed much lower (10-15%??). Medicine and law maybe higher than 35 (certainly nationally).

I doubled majored in CompSci and PoliSci before pursuing a software dev career. For the first 5 years of my career my PoliSci degree was personally fulfilling but not professionally relevant.

For the last 15 it’s been as important as my technical degree.

So many points of similarity. I’m a computer geek (actually CompSci professional) who likes walking, who was married to a librarian, who thinks bush is hot and loves seeing it, and who has an exhibitionist streak a mile wide and loves showing off. And Sertraline makes my life better 😊

I wish more CompSci people at these AI companies had been breadth to their education. Maybe they wouldn be such easy marks for a pseudo-religion like the Rationalists.
People are really mad at me being a big snob about liberal arts education but this was really a desperate plea for engineers to stop thinking every other field but theirs is for dumb babies.
One reason to learn about things outside your major is so that you have something to talk about with people at parties and on dates. No amount of money will make up for you being a crushing bore. History majors learn this early but I guess it takes other people longer.

Compsci degrees reporting in.
It's only value is it's any degree. Could've been basket weaving philosophy and I'd still be where I am.

I'm also a traitor to compsci - I worked for a for-profit college servicing company that dropped turn key curriculum in other colleges. It was all trash.

Back when I started my math undergrad, a professor jokingly told my class,

"Double-check your work! When compsci students write silly things the computer gives them errors, but with math, the paper doesn't complain"

I realize that, today, the paper *could* complain.

As a CompSci Major that also took Sociology electives, I wouldn't be surprised if you are correct and can confidently state that this is actually a very bad thing.

Quite glad I reviewed your video about the ContactGloves2 DiverX, cheers for that ^^ I am considering the the CG3, have you tried those? Also long overdue for creating my VRChat avi of this goblin, might you recommend software for folks with limited compsci exp?

I don't remember when I started thinking iframes we're bad in and of themselves. My custom blog API is simply not that interesting and is another thing I would probably never finish. Now I have a blog that's all wired up to atproto. Thanks leaflet iframe, you saved loads of time.

at the very least it obviously had zero qa but like. when i try to mentally work the bugs backwards, especially the stars thing, i cannot imagine how someone who took more than one college class in anything compsci would make these mistakes

String theory: flimsy, vaguely ridiculous sounding, CompSci adjacent terminology

Cable theory: strong, virile, might have an X-Men crossover?
