What was your first computer growing up?

Apple II+ ca. 1981.
My parents owned the local Computerland franchises.

This is how crypto works. It's pretend money they tell you keeps growing in value as long as you never spend it. It exists only in computerland and if someone flips a switch, it disappears.

An ad from the Vancouver Sun.

ComputerLand seemed to have a problem distinguishing between Apple and Commodore gear.

Of course ComputerLand and Commodore faded into oblivion over time and Apple went on to a trillion+ dollar valuation, at one point saved by Microsoft.

well, I'd argue that's somewhat the point? there are *lots* of minor points of friction in one's life that can now potentially be automated without any software expertise, especially if that friction is primarily located within computerland

Random things that seem weird when you are out of #computerland for some time:

- Searched for a tutorial on how to build an off-grid toilet - found a tutorial which explains how to build a toilet... in Minecraft.

- Had to stop a bus on an optional stop. The board describes two ways to stop it […]

7) I read SO MUCH all day at work (email, articles, news, here, currently I'mreading a lot of conceptual math to get what is coming my way in computerland) that by the time I come home I just want the pictures and easy stuff.
8) I am a voracious reader so the rule of PhDs ≠ normies applies

After my Heathkit, I bought the first-generation Apple II; no +, no e, just a 16k ram Apple with a 6502 processor.

$1199 +tax at Computerland. In 1979.

those were interesting times back then. my career had its beginnings at one of the very first computerland stores in the world. not entirely sure what my destiny would have been without those early days...

I was working at ComputerLand HQ. A coworker’s son gave him a pirated version, and we all played it every day.

Then Doom. Then multiplayer Doom. A life changer, for sure.

The topics of discussion in Computerland are getting boring, yes, AI is good/bad, yes Emacs/vim is the greatest editor, yes Facebook/Google/Microsoft are evil, and so what?

I don't want to think about #ai

I want to think about how to get out of computerland.

Any suggestions?

Let me tell you about the success of ComputerLand and Digital Equipment Corporation. Oh, and Trump Casinos, of course.

I was playing Doom. And a lot of softball, and a little hardball. Working at ComputerLand corporate HQ. Not a bad life, overall, but no extra money.

You know what actually brings me joy in computerland? Recovering and modernizing old scientific codes. I learn new science & engineering, the codes get a new lease on life and an overhaul that will last them for another 30 years without maintenance. It's a better class of problem than anything […]
