A male (drake) Mallard with an iridescent green head, white neck ring, chestnut-brown chest, light gray patterned flanks and back, black rear end and black tail feathers, and a yellow bill, swimming with a female (hen) Mallard with a mottled brown and tan body with a darker crown, dark stripe through the eye, and an orange bill with dark smudges. The ducks were swimming in brown, rippled water that had flowed over the banks of the nearby river into a wooded area. Seen in December at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

The Concord River where it runs along the edge of Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts. The blue waters were still and filled with reflections of trees covered with green leaves and other green plants that line the muddy banks. There are some white clouds in the blue sky above that are also reflected in the water. You can usually see birds swimming, perched, or flying in this area, with an occasional kayaker passing by.

A pair of Common Goldeneye diving ducks. In Massachusetts, they're winter visitors found along the coast and in open water, identified by their large, rounded heads and bright yellow eyes. The male has an iridescent dark green head with a circular white patch, black back, and white sides. The female has a chocolate-brown head, gray body, and a black bill tipped with yellow. These were two of six that I saw making their way down the Concord River at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts. I was on the other side of the river but was able to get a few shots of them.

A Great Crested Flycatcher with a bright lemon-yellow belly, olive-brown back, and cinnamon-rust tail. Males and females look almost identical. This bird was perched in a tall brown tree with green lichen in places and green leaves all around. The birds had built a nest in the hole just below the bird was perched. The blurred background has more green leaves and blue sky. Seen early in the morning at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

A Spotted Sandpiper (without spots on its chest) was in its non-breeding plumage of a grayish-brown back and a plain white breast. This was one of two sandpipers that were standing on a small brown mud flat near the edge of the Concord River. The water was rippling slightly and had reflections of the bird, a brown branch on the left, pink and red flowers near the bottom, and many shades of green foliage and leaves that were along the shoreline. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.
