I feel like psychometrics is uniquely bad at naming things. Parallel, congeneric, tau-equivalent, essentially tau-equivalent measures? Configural, metric, scalar, residual invariance? Item difficulty defined so that the higher the difficulty, the easier the item???

I realized that I was invoking the term 'configural psychometrics' on my updated website without defining the term. In fact it's a whole framework! So, I just sank half the day into writing this page that explains the framework from top to bottom. Enjoy!

Let’s put together a symposium and party in Seattle! Seriously, let’s chat about ideas. I’m thinking about symptoms in people in moments; identifying risky moments; configural psychometrics in time series data with @aaronjfisher.bsky.social. Please reach out if interested!

This is my PhD thesis

I did not ask for this

I did not consent to this

I did not approve of this

I was not compensated for this

I would not have advised this

I do not like this

And worst of all, the number of people who've read my thesis has still not increased.

One of the advantages of the configural approach is that it only examines presence and concurrence. So, you're only ever looking at those that have something, rather than those that don't. And I'm finding that the HiTOP works really nicely under configural analysis. 1/
Reposted first, finally read it.

Has me wondering about how if we restricted for no Psychopathology in large epi samples that we've used to sort of validate the dimensional structure (HiTOP) like the NESARC, how different would the structure look?
Excited to share a paper recently accepted at Nature Mental Health! 😄

For decades, we've assumed that covariance among psychopathology informs comorbidity. What if we’ve been wrong?

How do we make our ANNs shape-biased? -> There's a theory on how humans develop configural processing -> Instantiate computationally (requiring deep surveys in neurosci/cogsci) -> It works! Here's a completely new breed of shape-biased vision ANNs 👇

Excited about this work!
Here we take the configural psychometric framework to individual time series data. Please see Aaron’s thread and the preprint for the specs. Curious to hear folks’ thoughts!

I can think of plenty of configural reasons to do this, yes an all upper setup makes more sense to me, but the tradeoffs aren’t those that can be eyeballed

Research has shown that bees use a technique called "configural processing," similar to how humans recognize faces—by analyzing the arrangement of facial features. This ability helps them distinguish between flowers and potentially remember familiar humans.

I don't think one would think much of the blurry, underdeveloped vision that babies have. But apparently, if you miss a few months of vision after birth, you acquire configural processing deficits (you cannot readily distinguish faces based on relative positioning of the nose, lips, and eyes)! 1/7

If we define "configural units" as units that receive converging inputs from multiple stimuli; then any neural network is probably "configural", and some might perform operations that we deem "hierarchical"

3/3 This is called configural learning and requires the integration of stimuli into learning. Some have even suggested that it can be "be seen as an initial primitive manifestation of consciousness"

And, BTW, this stuff is an extension of my recent target article in JPCS: psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-..., which we've recently replicated in the NESARC wave sample (w/ Ashley and @lluaces.bsky.social). Hopefully that will be out soon. Happy to chat about configural analyses if you're curious! 9/9

Another place where the configural approach shines. It's especially well-suited to identifying specialized and/or small IV-DV subpopulations. In our HiTOP analyses, SI and other 'rare' symptoms from the somatoform cluster prove to be critical predictors in specific subgroups of the sample.
.. is the least common DSM MDD symptom and even in clinical populations shows floor effects on typical ordinal symptom scales. These items can't predict diagnostic status well due to lack of power stemming from floor effects.
