Like, this may be because I actually understand the thing is just a contactor listening for a "go" signal, and every layer on top of that is how chargers become unreliable.

However, these things require you to understand the program some more. For example, the whole government vs. contactor fight over IP rights, which the government lost despite paying for most, if not all, of the R&D that went into it.

So, the difficult and expensive part of an EV install is effectively maintenance-free. Or at least, won't need attention for many decades.
The charging stations themselves have one moving part: a contactor. The rest is electronics. So barring damage from vandals/collisions/etc there's little to do.

Funny piece of EV history: the 12V is mainly used for closing the contactor to energize the high voltage pack. The AC Propulsion eBox had a backup 9V battery you could quickly use to close the contactor and "jump" the car. Why modern companies haven't replicated something similar is beyond me
