Ghost, Beehiiv, and Kit (Convertkit) all offer better deals for monetized newsletters than Substack. For free newsletters with <1k subscribers, there is Pika ($5/mo).

Or go old school and mail hard copies! Anything but Substack.

I wish I could find the thread for this but back in December someone did a great cost comparison of some of the different services.
Chart comparing Substack, Ghost Pro, Self-hosted Ghost, Beehiiv, Buttondown, Mailchimp, and ConvertKit mailing list costs for different list sizes. It’s hard to get all this info into the alt text but the short version is that Substack is free for unpaid subscribers, but once you hit 7% paid, it becomes comparatively more expensive over 500 subscribers with 35 paid. ConvertKit, Ghost Pro, and Self-hosted Ghost are more affordable at that point, and Beehiiv is most affordable for lists over 100k with 7k paid.

Ghost, Buttondown, Beehiiv, Convertkit (now just called Kit) all organize and deliver newsletters to a mailing list that you control. Kit now has a Recommendations feature that shows your newsletter to readers of other newsletters to promote your content, too.

Beehiv is free for up to 2,500 subs, Medium is free (not much good if you want to earn from it, fine if you give it away), Kit (used to be ConvertKit) is free for up to 10k subscribers, Patreon is free unless you charge (10% if you do and working on more newslettery things)

The harder choices come for folks with over 1000 subscribers who aren't making much money on Substack right now, or who aren't monetizing their newsletters at all. Buttondown is $29/month for 1000-4999 subscribers, $79/month for 5000-9999 subscribers, and $139/month for 10,000-19,999 subscribers.
